For those unfamiliar with Linux Foundation, it is a nonprofit organization, which promotes the use, maintenance and growth of the Linux operating system. Currently the foundation has direct support from companies like HP, Intel, Google, and IBM among others, and now Twitter is joining the foundation.

Twitter is supported by thousands of Linux servers. Joining the foundation has a leg up on the latest developments in the world of Linux and also offers its expertise to other community members. MySQL, Cassandra, Hadoop, Lucene, Pig, and Memcached are also among some open source software packages currently used at Twitter. Twitter has joined the Linux Foundation as a Silver Partner and will contribute 15 thousand dollars a year.

“Linux and its ability to be heavily tweaked is fundamental to our technology infrastructure,” said Chris Aniszczyk, manager of open source for the social networking giant. “By joining the Linux Foundation we can support an organization that is important to us and collaborate with a community that is advancing Linux as fast as we are improving Twitter.”

Twitter uses Linux for the operation of its infrastructure, and actively participates in the development of open source projects. As part of the agreement, Twitter Linux Foundation intends to strengthen cooperation with the developer community and contribute to improving Linux.

Linux based products including servers are mostly used in big data operation. As per a report released earlier this year, nearly 72 percent of enterprise users will be adding more Linux servers to their environment in next one year to support big data.

“As the importance of data, especially real-time data, takes precedence both in the enterprise and in our personal lives, companies are relying on Linux to support more information, more of the time, and in more ways than ever before,” the foundation concluded. “Particularly, social media firms all rely on Linux to build out hugely scalable and efficient, low-cost, low-energy server farms to support massive data and traffic.”

While it does not cause any change to users, this union of the Linux Foundation and Twitter is fundamental and very positive for the future plans of Linux operating system. The biggies joining the foundation will help the foundation to improve more development. The continued success of the foundation is based on the union of the most important players in the tech community.
